Jenny felt uneasy.  It was a big bedroom, not what she was used to.  She still was reeling from the unexpected news of this inheritance.  She was startled out of her thoughts by the knock at the door.  It was Maggie and Doris the long time maids for the estate, who even at this hour were wearing their maid uniforms.

"We thought you might like some hot chocolate before you retire," Maggie, who was in her 50's said with a smile.

"I appreciate that, perhaps later," Jenny said as she brushed her hair.

"Later won't do, Mistress," Maggie said, "Now we will have to do it the hard way"

Jenny was startled by the maid's tone.  She put the brush down to look at her.  There was a gun in her hand.  Before Jenny could react, the 26-year old Doris grabbed Jenny from behind with her left hand and clamped a man's handkerchief over her mouth and nose.  The handkerchief smelled sweet.  Jenny instinctively struggled, but Doris had her in a very tight grip.  She tried to cry out.  Help was only a couple doors down the hallway.  Someone would hear her!  But the tightly clamped hand over her mouth with the accompanying handkerchief stifled any cries outside of her own room.

It suddenly dawned on Jenny that these women were waiting for some thing to happen.  Then she felt the weakness in her body.  Her legs began feeling like rubber.  Her attempts to pull Doris' arm away from her face became weaker.

"That's it, Jenny...breathe deeply.  Let the chloroform do its work," Maggie laughed.

Jenny's eyes flickered and closed as her world went black.

Jenny's rag doll body slipped to the floor.  Maggie came over, pried open Jenny's mouth and stuffed it with a wadded handkerchief.  She then produced several headscarves, tying one over Jenny's mouth.  Doris and Maggie used the others to bind Jenny.  Jenny was dragged away through a secret passage where no one would find her.

Let's face it, chloroform is useful for those of us writing or otherwise producing crime-related fetish bondage fantasies.  Now we know that television doesn't do it right.  Chloroform soaked cloth in her face for two seconds and the damsel is out.  We want her to struggle for 30, 45 or even 60 seconds before she is out and carried away to be bound and gagged.

But is that really the case?

From Wikipedia...

Criminal use

Chloroform has been reputed to be used by criminals to knock out, daze or even murder their victims. ...Use of chloroform as an incapacitating agent has become widely recognized, bordering on clichéd, due to the popularity of crime fiction authors having criminals use chloroform-soaked rags to render victims unconscious. However, it is nearly impossible to incapacitate someone using chloroform in this manner.[38] It takes at least five minutes of inhaling an item soaked in chloroform to render a person unconscious.

From... www.scienceabc.com/humans/movi…

Is it really like they show in movies and TV series?

Not as quick

While the right dose of chloroform soaked in a rag can definitely knock you unconscious, it would take much longer than what they show in movies (you wouldn’t drop unconscious just by taking a whiff!). Even with a perfectly measured dose, it would take at least a couple minutes to render someone unconscious.

Volatility issues

Chloroform is a volatile liquid, so it loses its effectiveness rapidly when it comes in contact with oxygen. Therefore, the “villain holding a chloroform-soaked rag in his hand while waiting for the victim to appear” is not a plausible scenario, as the chloroform in the rag would have long lost its effectiveness by the time it was actually pressed against the victim’s nose.

Highly dangerous

Looking at the way its usage is portrayed in movies and TV, you might think that it’s just another anesthetic liquid that’s harmless to the victim. However, that is absolutely false. On the contrary, chloroform can be very dangerous, to the point of being fatal to the victim if an inappropriate dose is administered or if the chloroform-soaked rag is placed too firmly against their face. The victim may have trouble breathing and suffocate, leading to deadly consequences. There’s a reason they don’t use chloroform as an anesthetic today, because its a challenging task to determine the right dosage that would render a person unconscious without impinging on other vital nerve functions.

So, the bottom line is...chloroform (or ether for that matter) does not work fast enough to effectively render a damsel unconscious during a criminal event (and it is dangerous).  I am not suggesting that we abandon this method of subduing damsels.  After all, we are dealing in fetish fantasy and TV shows will continue to use it.  But we should still understand the facts.

My concern is that there are idiots out there that want to try things like chloroform...I know, someone once wrote my company asking where they could get chloroform...thinking that we actually used it on our models.  Some people can't separate out fantasy from real life.

What is the most effective way of rendering a person unconscious in real life...a choke hold apparently. There are various types of choke holds and some work in 10 seconds or less, if done correctly.  Obviously, choke holds are very dangerous (if the hold is continued for more than a few seconds), which is why they are banned by many police departments.  Not sure how appealing a very quick subduing of a damsel would go over.  It would eliminate the handgag (with cloth in the hand) and the damsel's squirming in the arms of her attacker for a prolonged period.

Your mention of choke holds got me thinking. Been binge-watching "Person of Interest" on Netflix, and noticed that, beyond their awesome hand-to-hand combat skills, "Mr. Reese" and "Miss Shaw", "Mr Finch's" two "enforcers", favor the choke hold as a quick way to incapacitate a bad guy(or girl). I realize that someone not familiar with this particular "procedural" drama probably doesn't know what I'm talking about. Short version-Finch is a rich computer genius who built a computerized spy system to detect terrorist acts. When the government misused the system, Finch hacked into it and hijacked it to help  "irrelevant" ordinary people in danger from criminals-the people being ignored by the government. Reese and Shaw are his "muscle" who intervene directly when someone's "number" comes up on the "Machine". Probably irrelevant to this discussion, but just a thought in support of the choke hold.
